Comparison Guide

Krutidev vs DevLys Font

Two nearly identical legacy Hindi fonts with a handful of encoding differences. This guide covers the specific characters that differ and which government departments prefer which.

Quick Verdict

Use whichever font your office or exam requires. The typing experience is virtually identical. If you know one, you can use the other with 10 minutes of adjustment for the handful of characters that differ. The real question is not Krutidev vs DevLys - it is whether your organization has migrated to Unicode yet.

Why They Are Almost Identical

Both Krutidev and DevLys were created in the 1990s as digital implementations of the Remington Hindi typewriter layout. They solved the same problem at the same time using the same approach - mapping Devanagari glyphs to ASCII positions. The developers independently chose nearly identical mapping tables because the Remington typewriter layout dictated which physical key should produce which character.

The handful of differences exist because the font designers made slightly different choices for characters that the original Remington typewriter did not have. Matras like and are visual combinations of two strokes ( + and + ), and Krutidev chose to represent them as two-character sequences while DevLys added single-character alternatives for convenience.

In practice, if you hand a Krutidev-typed document to someone with only DevLys installed, about 95% of the text will render correctly. The remaining 5% - mostly words containing , , or - will show as different characters. This is enough to make documents unreadable in those specific words, which is why proper conversion is still necessary.

Converting Between Krutidev and DevLys

The fastest way to convert is through Unicode as an intermediate step. Convert your Krutidev text to Unicode using our Krutidev to Unicode converter, then convert the Unicode output to DevLys using the Unicode to DevLys converter. This two-step process handles all edge cases because both converters independently normalize the text.

For bulk conversion of office documents, copy the entire document text, run it through both converters, and paste the result into a new document with DevLys (or Krutidev) font selected. Formatting (bold, italics, headings) will need to be reapplied since the conversion is text-only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Krutidev aur DevLys me kya fark hai? (What is the difference?)
Both are non-Unicode Hindi fonts that map Devanagari characters to ASCII code points. The character mapping is 95%+ identical. The main differences: DevLys uses the character "£" for (Krutidev uses "[k"), DevLys has additional entries for some matra combinations ("¨" for , "©" for ), and DevLys has more font variants (DevLys 010 through DevLys 330+). For practical typing, the experience is nearly the same.
Can I convert between Krutidev and DevLys?
Yes, and the conversion is nearly 1:1 because the encoding tables overlap almost completely. Use our Krutidev to Unicode converter to convert either font to Unicode. Both fonts produce the same Unicode output for the same Hindi text. Direct Krutidev-to-DevLys conversion is possible by remapping the 5-10 characters that differ.
Which font is more widely used?
Krutidev 010 is more widely used overall, particularly in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh government offices. DevLys has a stronger presence in central government departments and some state governments that standardized on it earlier. Both are declining as the government transitions to Unicode, but the transition is slow - legacy documents in both fonts will need conversion for years to come.
Can I use DevLys for the CPCT exam?
CPCT specifically offers Krutidev 010 and Mangal as font options, not DevLys. If you currently type in DevLys, you can switch to Krutidev with minimal retraining (1-2 days) because the layouts are nearly identical. The handful of characters that differ will not significantly affect your speed.
Which font has better font variants?
DevLys has more font variants - the DevLys family includes over 30 variants (DevLys 010 through DevLys 330) covering regular, bold, condensed, decorative, and calligraphic styles. Krutidev has fewer variants (010, 011 bold, 016, 040 wide, Display 490). Both share the same base encoding, so conversion between variants within the same family is just a font-face change, not a character remapping.
