Unlike Krutidev (which spread through commercial channels) or Chanakya (which dominated publishing), DevLys was created specifically for government use by the Central Hindi Directorate. This gave it official backing that made it the default choice for ministry-level correspondence, Rajbhasha compliance documents, and internal government communications.

The name "DevLys" stands for Devanagari Lipi System. The font family includes multiple variants: DevLys 010 (standard), 020 (with different glyph proportions), 030, and so on. DevLys 010 is the most widely used variant and the one most government typists are trained on. Its character encoding closely mirrors Krutidev, reflecting the fact that both fonts implement the Remington typewriter layout that government typists learned on physical Hindi typewriters.
