How to Start Typing in Krutidev

Step 1: Install the Font

Download Krutidev 010, right-click the TTF file, select "Install". Takes 30 seconds.

Step 2: Select in Your App

Open Word, Notepad, or any editor. Click the font dropdown and select "Kruti Dev 010". Your keyboard now types Hindi.

Step 3: Learn Home Row

Start with 10 keys: d=क, k=ा, j=र, l=स, s=े, f=ि, h=ी, a=ं, g=ह, ;=य. These cover 40% of Hindi text.

How the Krutidev Keyboard Works

Krutidev does not use the InScript layout that the Indian government standardized for Unicode. It uses the older Remington typewriter layout, which was designed for mechanical Hindi typewriters in the 1960s. The Remington layout places characters by typing frequency, not by their position in the Devanagari alphabet.

The most typed consonant in Hindi, "क" (ka), sits on the home row under the right index finger (the "d" key). The most common matra, "ा" (aa), sits right next to it on "k". This arrangement lets experienced typists maintain 30+ WPM without looking at the keyboard.

One quirk that trips up every beginner: the chhoti i matra (ि) must be typed BEFORE the consonant it attaches to. To type "कि" (ki), press "f" first, then "d". Every other matra goes after the consonant. This is a legacy of how mechanical typewriters worked - the short i matra sits to the left of the consonant, so the typewriter carriage needed to print it first.

Half consonants (consonants with halant) have their own dedicated keys. Pressing Shift with most consonant keys gives the half form: "d" gives क, "Shift+d" gives क्. For consonants that use two keys (like ख = "[" + "k"), dropping the "k" gives the half form: "[" alone gives ख्.

Common Mistakes Beginners Make

Typing chhoti i matra after the consonant

Wrong: d then f = कि (incorrect position). Right: f then d = कि. The "f" key MUST come before the consonant. This is the #1 mistake - even experienced typists occasionally slip.

Forgetting Shift for half consonants

"d" gives full क but you needed half क् (for making conjuncts like क्र, क्ष). Press Shift+d for the half form. Many beginners type the full letter and wonder why conjuncts don't form.

Using number row for Hindi numbers

The number row (1-0) types English digits, not Devanagari numerals. For ०-९ you need Alt codes. Most government documents accept English numerals, so this is rarely an issue in practice.

Confusing Krutidev with InScript

If you enabled Hindi language in Windows, the default layout is InScript, not Krutidev. InScript has a completely different key mapping. Krutidev needs the font installed, not the Windows language setting. See our layout comparison.

Krutidev uses the Remington typewriter layout, not the InScript layout. Krutidev mein tra (<span lang="hi">त्र</span>) kaise likhe?
Press the "=" (equals) key on your keyboard. In Krutidev, the = key directly produces the conjunct त्र. This is one of the few conjuncts that has a dedicated single key. Most other conjuncts require typing the first consonant, then halant (~), then the second consonant.
What is the difference between Krutidev and Remington keyboard?
Krutidev IS a Remington-layout keyboard. The Remington layout was originally designed for Hindi mechanical typewriters in the 1960s. Krutidev 010 font implements this same layout digitally. When people say "Remington keyboard" in the context of Hindi typing exams, they mean the Krutidev layout. The alternative is InScript, which is the government-standard Unicode keyboard layout.
How to type <span lang="hi">ि</span> (chhoti i matra) in Krutidev?
Press "f" on your keyboard. Unlike other matras, the chhoti i matra in Krutidev is typed BEFORE the consonant it attaches to. For example, to type "कि" (ki), type "f" first, then "d" (for क). Krutidev mein half letter (halant) kaise type kare?
Press Shift+` (tilde key, above Tab) to type the halant (्). The halant removes the inherent vowel from a consonant, creating the "half" form. For example: क + ् = क् (half ka). Some half-letters have dedicated keys too - pressing Shift+d gives क् directly without needing to type halant separately.
Which Krutidev keyboard is used in CPCT exam?
CPCT (Computer Proficiency Certification Test) uses the standard Krutidev 010 Remington layout shown on this page. How to type <span lang="hi">रेफ</span> (reph/half ra) in Krutidev?
Reph (the half-र that sits on top of the next character) is represented by "Z" in Krutidev. To type "र्म" (rma), type the base consonant "e" (for म) first, then "Z" (Shift+z).
