Frequently Asked Questions
Krutidev mein shortcut key kahan se sikhe? (Where to learn Krutidev shortcuts?)
The table on this page is the complete reference. Start with the home row consonants: d (क), j (र), l (स), p (च), u (न), i (प), e (म), and matras: k (ा), h (ी), s (े), f (ि). These 12 keys cover roughly half of all Hindi typing. Practice them until they are automatic, then learn the remaining keys one row at a time.
How do I type special characters like <span lang="hi">ॐ</span>, ₹, or ° in Krutidev?
Krutidev 010 does not include the rupee sign (₹), degree symbol (°), or Om (ॐ) in its character set. These characters were added to Unicode after Krutidev was designed in the 1990s. To include them in a document, type the rest of your text in Krutidev, convert to Unicode using our converter, and insert the special characters in the Unicode version.
What is the difference between shortcut keys and character codes?
Shortcut keys refer to which physical keyboard key produces a specific Hindi character in the Krutidev font. Character codes refer to the underlying ASCII or Unicode code point stored in the file. For example, pressing "d" (shortcut) stores ASCII code 100 (character code) which the Krutidev font displays as "क". Our character codes page lists the numeric codes.
Can I customize the Krutidev keyboard shortcuts?
No. The key-to-character mapping is baked into the font file itself. Pressing "d" always produces ASCII 100, which Krutidev always renders as "क". There is no settings file or configuration panel. If you want a different layout, you need a different font (like Mangal with the Remington GAIL layout or InScript layout).
How to type half-letters (halant) faster?
Many consonants have a dedicated half-letter key that avoids typing halant separately. Shift+d gives क् directly. Shift+r gives त्. Shift+u gives न्. For consonants that require two keys (like ख = [ + k), dropping the "k" gives the half form: [ alone gives ख्. Memorize these dedicated half-letter keys and you save one keystroke per conjunct.
Is the Krutidev shortcut layout the same as Remington?
Yes. Krutidev implements the Remington Hindi typewriter layout digitally. The key positions are identical to the Hindi typewriter keyboards used in government offices since the 1960s. When a job listing says "Remington layout" or "Krutidev layout," they mean the same key arrangement.
