About Chanakya Font

Chanakya was one of the earliest Hindi fonts for personal computers in India. It gained popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s, particularly among Hindi newspaper publishers and printing presses. Before Unicode standardization, Chanakya was the go-to font for professional Hindi typesetting.

Unlike Krutidev, which uses the Remington typewriter layout, Chanakya has its own unique keyboard mapping. A typist trained on Chanakya cannot switch to Krutidev without relearning key positions. This created separate communities of Chanakya typists and Krutidev typists in Indian government offices.

Today, Chanakya is mostly used to open and convert legacy documents. New typing work has largely shifted to Unicode fonts (Mangal, Nirmala UI) or Krutidev 010. However, newspaper archives spanning decades are still in Chanakya encoding, making the converter tools valuable for digitization projects.

What is Chanakya font used for?
Chanakya is a legacy Hindi font used primarily in newspaper publishing, DTP (Desktop Publishing) work, and older Hindi word processing. It predates Krutidev and was one of the first widely-adopted Hindi fonts for computers in India. Many Hindi newspapers in the 1990s and early 2000s used Chanakya for typesetting. Is Chanakya the same encoding as Krutidev?
