Preeti Font in Nepal
Preeti holds a position in Nepal similar to what Krutidev holds in India. It is the most recognized Nepali computer font, with an estimated 70%+ of legacy Nepali documents typed in Preeti encoding. Developed specifically for the Nepali language variant of Devanagari, it includes characters and ligatures common in Nepali that may differ from Hindi Devanagari.
Nepal's government has been pushing for Unicode adoption since 2010, with the Nepal Telecommunication Authority mandating Unicode for official websites. But the ground reality in district offices, courts, and municipal bodies is different. Thousands of clerks and typists learned Preeti as their primary typing system and continue to use it daily. The accumulated skill investment in Preeti keyboard layout makes migration slow.
The Preeti keyboard layout differs significantly from India's Remington layout used by Krutidev. Key positions for common characters are arranged differently, and some Nepali-specific characters (like the Devanagari digit forms used in Nepal) have dedicated keys. This means a Krutidev typist cannot type in Preeti without relearning the layout.
This converter handles Preeti's unique encoding table, including its special handling of conjuncts common in Nepali text, the reph marker (which uses a different character than Krutidev), and the chhoti i matra repositioning. The output is standard Unicode Devanagari that works in every modern application.
