The Core Difference: Encoding

Krutidev and Mangal solve the same problem - typing Hindi on a computer - but they store text in fundamentally different ways. This single difference drives every other distinction between them.

Krutidev repurposes the Latin alphabet. When you press "d" with Krutidev active, the computer stores the ASCII character "d" (code 100). The Krutidev font then displays that "d" as "". Remove the font, and your text turns into meaningless English characters. The Hindi was never actually stored - only the visual rendering changed.

Mangal uses Unicode, the global text encoding standard. When you press a key mapped to "" with the Mangal keyboard driver active, the computer stores Unicode code point U+0915 - the actual, official code for the Devanagari letter "". Every modern device on Earth understands this code. No special font needed. Open the file on a Mac, a phone, or a Chromebook - "" stays "".

This is why government offices struggle with Krutidev documents. A circular typed in Krutidev on one computer becomes "ljdkjh vkns'k" on another computer that does not have the font. The same circular in Mangal reads correctly everywhere.

Who Should Use Which Font

Use Krutidev if...

  • Your office already uses Krutidev for all documents
  • Your typing exam specifically requires Krutidev 010
  • You already type 15+ WPM in Krutidev and have an exam soon
  • You work with legacy documents that cannot be migrated
  • Your computer does not allow system-level language changes (locked-down govt PCs)

Use Mangal if...

  • You are learning Hindi typing from scratch
  • You need to share text on WhatsApp, email, or web
  • Your exam allows both and you have 3+ months to prepare
  • Your office is transitioning to Unicode
  • You type on multiple devices (desktop, laptop, tablet)

Switching from Krutidev to Mangal

If you already know Krutidev and want to switch to Mangal, the transition takes 2-4 weeks of daily practice. The Remington GAIL layout (used by Mangal) shares about 80% of key positions with Krutidev. The main differences are in conjuncts, some special characters, and how matras interact with the keyboard driver.

The hardest part is not the layout. It is unlearning the habit of thinking in ASCII. In Krutidev, you mentally translate: "I need , so I press d." In Mangal, the mental model shifts to: "I press the key that the OS maps to ." The cognitive load drops once you stop thinking about the intermediate ASCII character.

Your existing documents stay in Krutidev. Use our Krutidev to Mangal converter to migrate old files. New documents go in Mangal. Within 6 months, your entire workflow will be Unicode-native.

Frequently Asked Questions

Krutidev aur Mangal me se kaun sa font aasan hai? (Which font is easier?)
Krutidev is slightly easier to start with because you just install the font and type. Mangal requires enabling Hindi language support in Windows and configuring the Remington GAIL or InScript keyboard driver. But long-term, Mangal is easier because your text works everywhere without conversion. If you are starting from zero with no exam deadline, learn Mangal. If your exam is in 2-3 months and you have some Hindi typing experience, stick with Krutidev.
CPCT exam me Krutidev use kar sakte hain ya Mangal? (Can I use Krutidev or Mangal in CPCT?)
CPCT allows both. The exam software lets you choose between Krutidev 010 and Mangal (Remington GAIL) at the start of the test. You cannot switch mid-test. About 65-70% of CPCT candidates choose Krutidev because they learned typing on it. The remaining 30-35% use Mangal. Your WPM score is calculated the same regardless of which font you pick.
Kya Krutidev se type kiya text WhatsApp par bhej sakte hain? (Can Krutidev text be sent on WhatsApp?)
No. Krutidev text looks like garbled English characters without the font installed. WhatsApp uses Unicode, so you must convert Krutidev to Unicode first. Mangal text works on WhatsApp directly because Mangal is a Unicode font. This is the single biggest practical advantage of Mangal over Krutidev - no conversion step needed for sharing.
Krutidev aur Mangal ka keyboard layout same hai?
The base layout is similar but not identical. Both descend from the Remington Hindi typewriter layout. Krutidev maps Hindi characters to ASCII code points (pressing "d" stores ASCII "d" which the font renders as ""). Mangal uses the Remington GAIL keyboard driver which maps physical keys to actual Unicode code points (pressing "d" stores U+0915, the real Unicode ""). Some key positions differ between the two implementations, particularly for conjuncts and special characters.
Mangal font kaise install kare Windows 10/11 me?
Mangal comes pre-installed on Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11. You do not need to download it. To use it for typing, go to Settings > Time & Language > Language > Add a language > Hindi. Then enable the Remington GAIL keyboard from the Hindi language options. Once enabled, press Win+Space to switch between English and Hindi keyboard layouts.
Kya Krutidev se Mangal me convert kar sakte hain? (Can I convert between them?)
Yes. Since Mangal is a Unicode font, converting from Krutidev to Mangal is identical to converting Krutidev to Unicode. Use our Krutidev to Mangal converter. The conversion is instant and handles all characters including conjuncts, matras, and reph forms.
Government jobs ke liye kaun sa font better hai?
It depends on the specific department. Madhya Pradesh state government offices predominantly use Krutidev. Central government departments have been transitioning to Unicode/Mangal since 2009. UP government uses a mix. For new government employees, learning Mangal is the safer long-term bet because the entire government is slowly migrating to Unicode. But for competitive exam preparation, learn whichever font your target exam accepts.
