Krutidev in MS Word

Set up Krutidev 010 for Hindi typing in Microsoft Word. Covers font selection, page layout, common problems, and document conversion.

Prerequisites

Before typing Hindi in Word with Krutidev, install the font on your system. Download the TTF file from our font page and follow the Windows installation guide. Restart Word after installation.

Selecting the Font

Open Word and click the font name dropdown in the Home tab. Type "Kruti" to filter the list. Select "Kruti Dev 010." Set the font size to 14pt or 16pt - Hindi text in Krutidev looks small at the default 11pt because Devanagari characters have more vertical detail than Latin letters.

A common mistake: selecting "Kruti Dev 010" versus "KrutiDev010" - these may appear as separate entries if you have installed the font from different sources. They should be identical, but if your text renders incorrectly with one, try the other.

Page Setup for Hindi Documents

Hindi government documents typically use these settings:

  • Font size: 14pt for body text, 16pt for headings. CPCT exam uses 16pt Krutidev 010.
  • Line spacing: 1.5 lines. Hindi characters need more vertical space than English.
  • Margins: 1 inch on all sides (the default) works for most documents.
  • Paper size: A4 (standard in India) or Legal for government notices.

Common Problems and Fixes

Text appears as English characters instead of Hindi
The Krutidev font is not selected. Select all text (Ctrl+A), then change the font to "Kruti Dev 010." If the document was opened on a computer without Krutidev installed, Word substitutes a default font and the text looks like random English letters.
Some characters display as boxes or question marks
This happens when the document contains special characters that the installed font variant does not support. Download and install all Krutidev variants (010, 011, 016) from our fonts page. The missing character is likely in a variant you do not have. Alternatively, the document may have been created with a completely different font (Chanakya, DevLys) - check with the document author.
Cannot type certain conjuncts or special characters
Most conjuncts in Krutidev require specific key combinations. Check our shortcut keys reference for the exact keystrokes. Common ones: त्र = press "=" key, क्ष = press Shift+[ then k, ज्ञ = press Shift+k. The interactive keyboard shows all character mappings.
Formatting breaks when converting Krutidev to Unicode
When you convert Krutidev text to Unicode and paste it back, Word may apply the wrong font. After pasting the Unicode text, select it all and change the font to a Unicode Hindi font like Mangal, Nirmala UI, or Arial Unicode MS. Bold, italic, and alignment formatting is preserved - only the font needs to change.

Converting Existing Documents

If you have a Krutidev document that needs to be shared on WhatsApp, email, or a website, you need to convert it to Unicode. Select the text in Word, copy it, paste into our Krutidev to Unicode converter, copy the Unicode output, and paste it into a new document with Mangal font selected.

For large documents (10+ pages), convert one section at a time. The clipboard has a practical limit of about 50,000 characters. Attempting to paste more may result in truncated text.

You have the wrong font selected. Krutidev text stored in a .docx file is actually ASCII characters (English letters) that the Krutidev font renders as Hindi glyphs. If you open the document with a different font active, those ASCII characters display as their English equivalents. Select all text and change the font to "Kruti Dev 010" to fix it.
Which Word version works best with Krutidev?
All versions work. Word 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, and Microsoft 365 all support Krutidev identically because it is a standard TrueType font. The only version with occasional issues is Word Online (the browser version) - it may not display Krutidev correctly because the font is not installed on Microsoft servers. Use the desktop app for Krutidev work.
How do I set Krutidev as the default font in Word?
Open Word, press Ctrl+D to open the Font dialog. Select "Kruti Dev 010" as the font, choose your preferred size (usually 14pt or 16pt for Hindi). Click "Set As Default" at the bottom left. Choose "All documents based on the Normal template" and click OK. Every new document will now start with Krutidev.
