About Preeti Font

Preeti is to Nepal what Krutidev is to India. It is the legacy Devanagari font that became the de facto standard for Nepali typing on computers. Government offices, schools, newspapers, and publishing houses across Nepal adopted Preeti in the 1990s, and it remains in active use today.

The font uses its own keyboard layout that differs from both Krutidev (Hindi Remington) and InScript. A Preeti typist uses a different set of key mappings to produce Nepali Devanagari characters. The "/" key, for example, produces a different character in Preeti than in Krutidev.

Nepal has been transitioning to Unicode for official communications, but legacy documents in Preeti encoding still require conversion for digital distribution. Our Preeti to Unicode converter handles this transformation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Preeti font?
Preeti is the standard Nepali typing font used in Nepal government offices, publications, and schools. It maps Devanagari Nepali characters to ASCII code points, similar to how Krutidev works for Hindi. Text typed in Preeti looks like random English characters without the font installed. Preeti has been the dominant Nepali font since the 1990s and remains in use across Nepal.
Can I use Krutidev keyboard shortcuts with Preeti font?
No. Preeti has a completely different keyboard layout from Krutidev. Pressing "d" in Krutidev produces "" but in Preeti it produces a different Nepali character. You need to learn the Preeti-specific key mappings separately. The only thing the two fonts share is the underlying concept of mapping Devanagari glyphs to ASCII positions. For converting between the two, first convert to Unicode using our Preeti to Unicode converter, then use Unicode to Krutidev.
Can I convert Preeti text to Unicode?
Yes. Our Preeti to Unicode converter handles this conversion. Paste Preeti text and get standard Unicode Devanagari output that works on any device without font installation.
Which Preeti version should I download?
The standard Preeti font is the one you need for most Nepali typing work. There are no numbered variants like Krutidev 010/011. If your organization specifies a particular version, ask which one they use. The font on this page is the standard widely-used version.
