Krutidev in WPS Office
WPS Office reads system fonts, not its own font directory. Install Krutidev on your OS first, then it appears in WPS Writer, Spreadsheet, and Presentation. The workflow is similar to MS Word but the menus are in different places.
Where WPS Finds Fonts
Unlike MS Office, which has its own font directory at C:\Windows\Fonts integration, WPS Office relies entirely on the operating system's font list. On Windows, this means fonts must be in C:\Windows\Fonts\ (installed for all users). On Linux, WPS reads from ~/.local/share/fonts/ and /usr/share/fonts/.
A common mistake: installing a font by double-clicking the TTF file and clicking "Install" on Windows puts it in the per-user directory, not the system directory. WPS sometimes does not detect per-user fonts. Right-click the TTF file and choose "Install for All Users" instead.
Windows Setup
- Download the Krutidev 010 TTF from our font page
- Right-click the downloaded file and select "Install for All Users" (not just "Install")
- Close WPS Office completely. Check the system tray for WPS background processes and exit them.
- Reopen WPS Writer. Click the font dropdown and type "Kruti" to filter. Select "Kruti Dev 010."
If you installed Krutidev while WPS was running, WPS may not detect it even after closing and reopening the document. You need to fully exit WPS, including the background service that keeps it in the system tray. Right-click the WPS icon in the system tray and choose "Exit."
Linux Setup
WPS Office for Linux (available as a .deb or .rpm package) uses the system font cache. Install Krutidev the same way as for LibreOffice:
cp ~/Downloads/kruti_dev_010.ttf ~/.local/share/fonts/
fc-cache -fvWPS on Linux has a known issue where it does not detect fonts added to ~/.local/share/fonts/ until you log out and back in. Running fc-cache -fv alone may not be enough. If the font does not appear after running fc-cache, log out of your desktop session and log back in, or install the font to the system directory: sudo cp kruti_dev_010.ttf /usr/share/fonts/truetype/.
WPS Writer vs WPS Spreadsheet
WPS Writer handles Krutidev the same way as MS Word. Select the font, set size to 14pt, and start typing. The keyboard shortcut for opening Font Settings is different from Word. In WPS Writer, use the ribbon's Font group dialog launcher (small arrow in the bottom-right corner) instead of Ctrl+D.
WPS Spreadsheet (the Excel equivalent) has the same auto-format issue as Excel. Krutidev text that maps to date-like patterns gets silently converted. Format cells as Text before entering data. See our Excel guide for detailed prevention steps, which apply identically to WPS Spreadsheet.
WPS Presentation (the PowerPoint equivalent) supports Krutidev in text boxes. Insert a text box, change the font to Krutidev, and type. Slide templates with Krutidev need the font installed on every computer that opens the file. If presenting on a different machine, export the presentation as PDF to embed the font.
Keyboard Shortcuts Comparison
Most MS Word keyboard shortcuts work in WPS Writer because WPS was designed as a Word-compatible alternative. The Krutidev key mappings (Remington layout) work identically since they depend on the font, not the application. However, some application shortcuts differ:
| Action | MS Word | WPS Writer |
|---|---|---|
| Font dialog | Ctrl+D | Ribbon dialog launcher |
| Save as PDF | File > Save As > PDF | File > Export to PDF |
| Bold | Ctrl+B | Ctrl+B (same) |
| Find and replace | Ctrl+H | Ctrl+H (same) |
Opening MS Word Documents in WPS
WPS reads .doc and .docx files natively. If the document was created with Krutidev in MS Word and you have Krutidev installed, the Hindi text renders correctly. The font name in the document metadata must match the installed font name exactly.
A font name mismatch happens when MS Word registered the font as "Kruti Dev 010" (with spaces) but your WPS installation lists it as "KrutiDev010" (no spaces). This depends on the TTF file source. WPS will show the text as English characters because it cannot find the font by name. Select all text (Ctrl+A) and manually set the font to whichever Krutidev variant appears in your WPS font dropdown.
